Room to Grow: Finding the Right First Role in Occupational Therapy

Your first Occupational Therapy role is a chance to put your learning into practice, build confidence and discover where you want your career to take you. Finding an environment that supports that growth deserves careful thought.

Qualifying as an occupational therapist takes commitment. When you begin looking for your first role, there is plenty to consider: the setting, the people you will support, the working pattern and the opportunities to develop.

A job description gives you an introduction. A proper conversation helps you understand what working there would actually feel like.

Before applying or accepting an offer, take time to explore the foundations around the role. What will help you settle in? Who will you learn from? What will be expected of you as your confidence grows?

Understand what support looks like

“Supportive team” sounds reassuring in an advert. Ask what that means during an ordinary working week.

Who would you turn to with questions? How is supervision arranged? What would your induction involve? How would the team help you approach unfamiliar responsibilities?

Practical examples can make those answers clearer. Ask how the employer has supported someone joining at a similar stage, or how they would structure your first few months.

You should be able to picture how you will learn, ask questions and develop within the team.

Explore the caseload behind the job title

Two Occupational Therapy roles with similar titles can offer very different experiences.

Ask about the people you would work with, the settings you would cover and how your caseload would be introduced. Explore how responsibilities are allocated and reviewed, and how the team responds when priorities change.

Think about the balance you would value. You may enjoy variety across different environments, or prefer greater consistency while you establish your working routine.

Understanding those preferences helps you recognise which opportunities deserve a closer look.

Look at the whole working week

The practical details matter alongside the professional opportunities.

How much travel is involved? Would you work mainly from one location or across several sites? How is time organised for appointments, preparation, documentation and team discussions?

Ask what a typical week looks like, while recognising that every week may be different.

These conversations help you assess how the role would fit your life and whether the working arrangements feel sustainable for you.

Decide where you want room to grow

You do not need to have your entire career mapped out before taking your first position.

It can still help to identify what you would like to explore. Perhaps you want to deepen your experience in a particular setting, learn alongside experienced colleagues or build confidence across a broader range of responsibilities.

Ask how development is discussed and planned. What opportunities are available to learn from others? How would your progress be reviewed? How might your responsibilities change over time?

Clear answers give you a stronger basis for comparing roles.

Employers: explain the foundations you offer

If your vacancy welcomes newly qualified occupational therapists, make that clear throughout the hiring process.

Describe the induction, supervision arrangements and expectations for someone joining at that stage. Explain which experience is essential on arrival and which skills you can help someone develop.

Be specific about the working environment and the support available. Those details help candidates decide whether to apply and create a more useful discussion at interview.
